Grand Old Mill History

“Barnard’s Mill”, presently Grand Old Mill, is probably the most historic landmark in the area. Constructing the mill in 1866 (Civil War Era) carpenter William Northrup used white pine and beams from the wooded section of the area and these were hewn, placed, and pegged in the spot. His idea was to take care of the thriving mill trade in those early days. Power was supplied by the waterfall from the original dam on Nippersink Creek, located about halfway from the present mill site. The new dam was put in by Wonder Lake developers in 1929.

In about 1884 the mill was purchased by Edgar C. Barnard who operated it for many years in the little community of two blacksmith shops, a store, and houses nestling around the mill on the banks of the Nippersink.

Edgar Barnard died in 1918 and the mill lay idle for many years until his son Earl, with wife Keturrah, renovated and started a boarding house in the mill. They began serving meals to the “Dam Gang” working on the new Wonder Lake development. Mrs. Barnard’s cooking skills drew great crowds to the mill until its sale in 1945.

Since then, under other owners, this historic place has continued to serve the area with traditionally fine food and good hospitality. In 1994, the business was purchased by the current owners, Dani and Judy. The name was changed to Grand Old Mill but the menu, containing many of the old time favorites remain. The duo brings with them almost 60 years in the restaurant business. Because of this background, they are able to bring you some of the family’s traditional and home cooked specialties. Please relax and enjoy the cozy and seasonal decorations, with a specialty beverage from the full service bar.

The old mill has stood proudly for almost 150 years, sheltering within its walls memories, secrets, and stories of another lifetime. By its side, the waters of the Nippersink flow on and on………
